“Music expresses that which cannot be said and on which it is impossible to be silent.”Victor Hugo
Born on May 7th, 1985 into a family of accomplished musicians – his grandfather was a renowned violinist and conductor who played for decades with the Romanian National Folkloric Ensemble and his father is a professional jazz saxophonist – Sorin grew surrounded by the sound of classical and contemporary music.
Continuing in the family’s tradition, he studied multiple instruments, beginning at the age of seven with the violin and clarinet. At the young age of thirteen he won the National Music Olympics and two years later was featured as a soloist with the Romanian Philharmonic Orchestra “Mihail Jora”. In 2009 he graduated from the “George Enescu” University of Arts with a degree in classical clarinet.
It was during those university years when he started to experiment and then fell completely in love with jazz. Beginning as an autodidact, his musical influences shifted to the work of Dizzy Gillespie, Keith Jarret, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson, and Chick Corea. He found the piano as the sublime instrument to reflect his innermost feelings as a composer and orchestrator, and he perfected his technical virtuosity by earning in 2011 a Master in Music Degree from the Romanian National University of Music, the Piano Jazz Section.
His style is a surprising fusion of jazz, Latin, pop and classical music, erupting into a colorful and fascinating repertoire. His talent, revealed by his ability to find new dimensions to existing jazz standards and to create original compositions, gained him instant recognition on the jazz scene.
As a fresh Master’s Degree graduate, starting in 2011, his ascension on the jazz scene is reflected through a series of awards he won:
2015 Grand Prize
Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition, Florida, United States
2015 Best Jazz Musician of the Year Award

He proved to be a promising young musician from the beginning of his performing career, by winning the 2010 Grand Prize at the International Jazz Competition, Sibiu, and the 2009 Grand Prize at the International Student Jazz Competition, Targul Mures, Romania while still a student.
He was also the 2015 Nominee for the “Public Diplomacy” Award, “Most Important People of Our Time” (Oamenii Timpului) in his home country.
Sorin appeared in numerous festivals, both nationally and internationally, as a solo performer or with his Trio. Notable festivals include: Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, Getxo Jazz Festival, Sibiu Jazz Festival, Jazz Napocensis, Cluj Napoca, Bucharest Jazz Festival, Jazz Compass, Terra Festival, Instanbul, Turkey, Jazz Hoeillart, Belgium, and Enter Music Festival, Poland. He had the chance to share the stage with great artists such as Kenny Garett, Lee Ritenour, Branford Marsalis, Lee Konitz, Roy Hargrove, Chris Potter, Chucho Valdes, Sonny Emory, Jeff Ballard, Dave Grusin, Ravi Coltrane, and Leszek Mozdzer.
2014 was a very rewarding year, further consolidating his career accomplishments by reaching the finalist stage at elite international competitions such as the “Parmigiani Montreux Jazz Piano International Competition” in Switzerland and the Nottingham Jazz Piano Competition in the United Kingdom.
In the summer of 2015, Sorin launched his first album, entitled “Endurance”, an album centered on the power of love and family and which is an attestation to his progression as an artist and to his creative capabilities. The idea of the album came to life with Sorin composing the song “Roxane”, dedicated to his sister. In 2011 she was diagnosed with cancer and it was from the pain, suffering, and turmoil that come from these events, that the song was born. If one listens carefully, all these emotions are masterfully reflected in the melody. With influences from the Latin, flamenco, and classical music styles combined with jazz, each song reaches new harmonic and rhythmic depths that leave a lasting impression with the audience. As an artist underwritten by the Romanian Cultural Institute, Sorin can be found performing in jazz clubs both in his country of origin, as well as across Europe and North America.
